History, Mission, Officers & More
The Coachella Valley Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution was established on November 5th, 1994, and serves the Coachella Valley communities and surrounding area. Our members tend to be centered around Rancho Mirage, California, but come from as far away as places like Blythe in the east, and Hemet on the west side of the San Jacinto mountain range.
If you reside in this area and are a male descendant of a Patriot ancestor that took part in the American Revolution, we would love to hear from you! Qualifying participation in the American Revolution takes many forms: military service in the militias or Continental Army; providing money and/or supplies to the troops; pledging allegiance to the cause; suffering depredation as a result of the war; and/or serving as a civil servant or in a governing or judicial role in the colonial government during wartime.
The chapter is proud to announce the following programs to support the Coachella Valley communities:
The chapter participates in the Wreaths Across America program, which honors veterans by placing wreaths on their graves during the holiday season. The chapter also raises funds for this program.
In 2026, our country will celebrate its 250th birthday, marking the anniversary of the American Revolution. Our chapter will actively participate in commemorating and endorsing this significant event.
In December of 2025, we erected a monument in Desert Memorial Park Cemetery in Cathedral City to honor George Washington and the Patriots who founded the United States of America. This monument is intended to be part of and commemorate the America 250 celebration.
Every year, our chapter marches in the annual Palm Springs Veterans Day Parade in honor of our heroic Veterans. We march with a horse-drawn carriage and dressed in Continental Army Uniforms showing our appreciation for our Veterans.
The Coachella Valley Chapter welcomes all those interested in the chapter's objectives to join them at their monthly meetings. The chapter meets on the third Friday of each month at 11:30 AM, October through May, at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage.

We document, commemorate, and share the stories of Revolutionary War Patriots to ensure their sacrifices are remembered.
We inspire love of country through ceremonies, public events, and engagement with schools and civic organizations.
We give back to the Coachella Valley through volunteer service, youth programs, and charitable contributions.

This is an ongoing project. To help bring our Patriots to life, we have asked our members to provide a picture of themselves at the same age their Patriot served. With the help of AI, we have transformed them into the likeness of their ancestors, endeavoring to represent them in appropriate uniform or dress given their ancestor's type of patriotic service.
Perhaps the most common type of military service — men enlisted in local militias that fought with guerrilla tactics alongside the Continental Army, guarded prisoners, and protected essential supplies or refugees.
Troops in the Continental Army were highly trained professional soldiers with the full backing of the Continental Congress, taking the lead in the battle for Independence.
A general term referring to service in the Continental Government — from Justice of the Peace to Representatives at the Continental Congress. By serving, the Colonies could continue to function outside British rule.
By providing supplies or paying a supply tax, these Patriots funded the Revolutionary War effort. Contributing was risky — should the war not go well, the consequences were severe.
By pledging an Oath of Allegiance to America, colonists put their lives and property in jeopardy should the British prevail.
Loss of property due to the conflict at the hands of the British — including destruction of homes, farmland, or confiscation of assets such as crops or livestock.
Born about 1762 in Westmoreland County, VA, he enlisted as a Private in 1778 at the age of 16, and again in 1780 at age 18. In the Southern Campaign he fought at Guilford Court House, Hobkirk's Hill, the Siege of Ninety-Six, and Eutaw Springs, where he was "slightly wounded" and saw no further action.
He married Sarah Reeder on 20 March 1788 in Hampshire City, VA. In December 1788 they arrived in the new Ohio Territory settlement of Columbia — later to become Cincinnati — with Sarah's father and uncles and their families. Their child, Vincent, was the first child born in the new settlement on 26 October 1791.
Jeremiah and his son Vincent served together in the War of 1812. He made the first successful Revolutionary War Bounty Land Claim in Ohio Territory in 1817.
Jeremiah died 27 July 1834 in Butler County, OH, and is interred at Van Lue Cemetery, Ross Township, Butler County, OH.
Quakers, Mary Armfield and Jacob Brown lived on the North Carolina frontier. They were no strangers to conflict and often met aggression as a married couple. Jacob was born 04 Jan 1755 in Rowan, Guildford County, NC. Mary Armfield was born 29 Mar 1759 in Bucks County, PA. While Quakers generally did not bear arms in the American Revolution, an unfortunate raid on the family farm by Loyalist forces, caused Jacob to angrily enlist. He fought in the Southern Campaign. When Jacob’s regiment came back North, his wife, Mary, learned that they were one county away. She and another soldier’s wife packed up two horses with all the supplies they could find and headed out to meet the men. On the way, while fording a stream, Mary lost the supplies and nearly drowned. The following day, the women found the men in camp. Mary was at her husband’s side during the Battle of Guilford Court House.
Jacob died 09 Jun 1831 at Flat Rock, Henry County, IN. He was interred at the Flat Rock Friends Cemetery. Mary died 27 Jun 1827 at New Castle, Henry County, IN.
Born about 1752 in Lancaster County, PA, David enlisted as a Private in the PA Militia in 1782.
He married Ann Herr before 1780 and later married Mary Stout. David and Ann had a son, Samuel Hamacker, born 22 January 1790 in VA.
David died after 1810 in Augusta, VA.
Born about 1710 in County Offaly, Ireland, Hercules Mooney enlisted as a Major in 1776. A veteran of the French-Indian War, he then served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the NH Militia. He fought at Fort Anne, Trenton, Princeton, and Ticonderoga, and was promoted to Colonel in 1779. He helped with the defense of Rhode Island until 1780.
He was a schoolmaster in Dover, NH, and married Elizabeth Evans and later Mary Spencer Jones.
After the war, Hercules moved to Holderness, NH, where he served as a Justice of the Peace for Grafton County and for the New Hampshire General Court.
Hercules died in April 1800 at Holderness, Grafton County, NH.
Born in 1740 at Bethlehem, Hunterdon County, NJ, Richard served as a Juror in cases against British Loyalists in 1778 at Lebanon, Hunterdon County, NJ.
Richard married Grace Thatcher in 1776 at Hunterdon County, NJ. They had a son, Benjamin Opdyke.
Richard died before 09 June 1825 at Kingwood, Hunterdon County, NJ, and is interred at Sutton Farm, Hunterdon County, NJ.
Born 28 May 1737 at Greenwich, Fairfield County, CT, he enlisted 28 January 1777 as a Corporal serving Captain Jonathan Whitney's 9th Regiment CT Militia at the age of 40.
During his service he helped lay a chain across the Hudson River and fired upon British boats from the bluff overlooking the river.
Prior to his enlistment, he married Sarah Webb 23 January 1766 in Stamford, Fairfield, CT. They had a son, Joseph, born 24 February 1778 at Stamford, Fairfield County, CT.
John died 26 April 1808 at Cortlandt, Westchester County, NY, and is interred at the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery at Yorktown, Westchester County, NY.
Born Johannes/John Post on 01 January 1749 at Schenectady, Schenectady County, NY, he enlisted in 1776, serving as Commissary and Quartermaster for the duration of the war with the NY Continental Army.
John was a close friend and colleague of General George Washington. A smart businessman, he managed the difficult logistics required to keep an army equipped and fed, often with limited resources.
As an officer in the Continental Army for the duration of the war, John Post is a member of the Society of the Cincinnati.
John married Margarietja/Margaretta Bellinger on 07 January 1779 at Pompton Plains, NJ, while in camp with the Continental Army. They had a daughter, Maria, born 08 January 1786 at Schenectady, Schenectady County, NY.
John died 06 December 1830 at Jamesville, Onondaga County, NY, and is interred at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Jamesville, Onondaga County, NY.
Born 03 January 1763 at Goochland County, VA, he enlisted at the young age of 16 to guard prisoners of war at Abermarle, VA, until March or April 1781, when the prisoners were moved to Winchester, VA. He then guarded refugees and magazines until his discharge in May 1781. Rowntree entered service as a Private and was promoted to Sergeant before his discharge.
His wife's name is unknown. They had a son, William C. Rountree, born about 1808 in VA.
Rowntree died 25 February 1852 at Henrico County, VA.
Born about 1737, likely in Augusta County, VA. He was a contemporary and hunting companion of Daniel Boone in the Green River Valley of KY between 1770 and 1771.
Along with his brothers Richard and Henry, they blazed Skaggs Trace — a vital frontier trail that forked off from Daniel Boone's Wilderness Road. It ran from Hazel Patch to Crab Orchard, KY, and served as a major route for the later settlement of Kentucky.
Charles' military service was primarily focused on the VA frontier, protecting settlements from British-aligned tribal attacks.
The three brothers each had a nickname: Charles was the Longhunter, Henry was the Explorer, and Richard was the Sharpshooter — serving as a sharpshooter with Morgan's Riflemen at the Battle of Saratoga.
Charles died 22 January 1816 at Green County, KY.
This is an ongoing project. Additional Patriot biographies and portraits will be added as members contribute their family histories. If you are a chapter member and would like to participate, please contact us.
